"1963. Buftea. Cornea, directorul studioului, intelectual si politruc de profesie, ma intreaba: "Ati dori sa faceti un film de fictiune, aveti o preferinta?" Am raspuns destul de timid: "Ultima noapte de dragoste, intaia noapte de razboi - Camil Petrescu". Era un roman care ma impresionase: razboi, dragoste, gelozie...."Camil Petrescu? Buna idee, dar de ce nu faci Patul lui Procust?" Intelegand ca imi pierdeam vremea, i-am raspuns: "Pentru ca nu cred ca un astfel de film se poate face astazi in Romania." "Poate un film istoric....", am indraznit eu. "Cam la ce te-ai gandit?" "Sa zicem Stefan cel Mare." "Imposibil! Il face Mircea Dragan." "Atunci Mihai Viteazul..." "Imposibil, il face Mihnea Gheorghiu.", a venit prompt raspunsul. "Traian si Decebal?" Tovarasul consulta o hartie pe care avea planurile urmatoarelor patru cincinale. "Imposibil, il face Mircea Dragan in 1985." "Atunci Dacii", am incheiat eu. Incurcatura. Dacii nu erau pe lista "cincinalurilor".
1965. Paris. Henry Deutschmeister, unul dintre cei mai importanti producatori din Franta, evreu roman nascut la Braila, mare si adevarat patriot, ma intreaba: "Vrei sa faci un film de fictiune, domnule Nicolaescu?" "Da. Un film in costume, Dacii." "De acord", a raspuns sec...si am facut filmul, o coproductie romano-franceza cu actorii Pierre Brice, Georges Marchal, Marie Jose Nat. In curand se vor implini 40 de ani de la premiera filmului...debutul meu...care a fost totodata si cel mai mare succes de public din Romania, prima manifestare publica de patriotism romanesc, indraznesc sa spun. Doi ani mai tarziu, in 1967, I.Gh.Maurer imi marturisea ca succesul de public al filmului l-a convins pe Gheorghiu Dej si pe el ca "ceva" se poate schimba in politica Romaniei. Sunt foarte mandru ca prin debutul meu am redeschis drumul nationalismului romanesc" (Sergiu Nicolaescu).

Dacii (1967)
Decebal (Amza Pellea) este dispus să facă sacrificiul suprem pentru a păstra integritatea poporului său. Fiul său, Cotyso (Alexandru Herescu), este dăruit zeilor spre disperarea lui Decebal şi a fiicei sale, Meda. Septimius Severus (Pierre Brice), un tânăr roman devotat ţării sale adoptive, va fi pus să aleagă între originile sale de sânge şi cultura în care a fost crescut.
